KATHMANDU, Nepal - In the Jajarkot district, two elderly people died from the cold. Bhuleshwor Karki, 88, was from Bheri Municipality-2, and Narendra Bahadur Singh, 73, belonged to Barekot Rural Municipality-4.
They had been living in tents since their homes were destroyed by a 6.4 magnitude earthquake on November 3 in Ramidanda, Jajarkot, resulting in significant loss of life and property.
According to Bir Bahadur Giri, Chairperson of the Barekot Rural Municipality, both victims suffering from asthma fell prey to the increasing cold.
He stated that over 34,000 families in Jajarkot are currently living in tents after the earthquake that destroyed all the houses in the area.
Children, new mothers, chronic disease patients, and the elderly are especially vulnerable to the harsh conditions.
Suresh Sunar, the Chief District Officer of Jajarkot, reported that children and older adults are suffering from respiratory problems. He also stated that three chronic disease patients died as a result of the cold in Nalgad-4.
Initiatives are being launched to ensure the safety of children, new mothers, chronic patients, and the elderly.
