DHAKA, Bangladesh - For smuggling 624 bars of gold across the Jashore border in Sharsha, a court sentenced three people to death, two to life in prison, and four to 20 years in prison. Two of the people sentenced to life in prison are Indians.
On Thursday, Additional District and Sessions Judge Tajul Islam decided on the case.
Mohiuddin Tarafdar, Jahidul Islam, and Mojibur Rahman are the three death-row convicts.
Masud Rana and Shafiqul Mandul, both from West Bengal, India, were sentenced to life in prison.
Shafi, Imran Hossain, Rubel Sheikh, and Kabir Hossain received 20-year sentences.
According to the court's Public Prosecutor Asaduzzaman, who cited case documents, at 11:50 p.m. on the night of Oct. 9, 2018, a BGB patrol from the Shikarpur Camp in Sharsha pursued and detained a smuggler and recovered two sacks near the Narikelbaria Border Pillar.
Mohiuddin had 224 gold bars on him. As they fled, another 400 bars were recovered from the smugglers' abandoned sacks. The total weight of the gold seized was 72.4 kg.
Mukul Hossain of the Shikarpur BGB camp reported the incident. Sharsha police investigated the case, and CID Dhaka Inspector Korban Ali filed the chargesheet.
