DHAKA, Bangladesh - As workers were working on the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project on the Dhaka-Mymensingh route near Uttara in the capital, at least four people-including children, died when a girder fell on their car from a crane.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Mohsin of the Uttara West police station verified the incident to the press at around 3:30 pm on Monday.
Those killed were named as Zakaria, aged 2, Jannat, aged 6, Jharna, aged 28, and Rubel, aged 50.
In addition, Hridoy and Riya also suffered injuries.
BRT Managing Director (MD) Shafiqul Islam asserted that a mechanical malfunction was to blame for the tragedy.
He remarked: "The crane presumably swayed when moving the girder from one spot to another, and the girder fell."
When asked who should take responsibility for the incident, he responded, "At this time, I cannot comment without knowing the specifics. It's a mechanical issue. It has nothing to do with security precautions."
Rescue efforts caused lengthy traffic jams in the nearby areas.
